Today's Gravel World Championships provide an opportunity for riders of different disciplines and abilities to come together in a new event, and one of it's main figures Mathieu van der Poel will be sticking to his road bike.
The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider had a difficult finale to the season, with a climax at the World Championships where he was arrested following an altercation with two young girls which eventually led to him abandoning the road race. The Cyclocross season looms ahead, however the Dutchman has decided to travel to Italy to give World Championships a second go.
He had said, after returning to Europe, that he had been adapting to the gravel bike he was meant to ride during today's race. However, in a picture shared on Strava, he revealed he changed his setup, and will instead continue riding his Canyon Ultimate CFR, with a set of knobby tires alongside however.
The choice however put on the spotlight once again the actual difference between gravel bikes and already-existing road and cyclocross bikes, as riders have chosen to ride a gravel-heavy event without the preference for the bikes that are specifically designed for such.
