Tom Pidcock has just won the XCO World Championships and put on the rainbow jersey. A race surrounded with controversy but ultimately that fell on the favour of the Olympic Champion, he now looks to put it on display as he plans a calendar around the discipline.
“But first, of course, I need a vacation," Pidcock tells in an interview with CyclingWeekly. A busy season where he put more focus on the road, at the Tour de France that work was palpable as he featured alongside the very best in several summit finishes on the first two weeks. The brutal Grand Tour ended up seeing him crack out of GC contention, but it was a good test and one that saw him emerge out with good form towards the World Championships. "It was not easy to immediately focus on this World Championships after a tough Tour. That's why I deliberately let the road race pass me by."
The road race suited his abilities but he put his whole focus off-road. He finished third in the Short Track event, and then soared to victory at the XCO race. He's now the World Champion in the most important discipline of Mountain Biking, and he will, ahead of next year's Olympic Games, put in more work to gather UCI points and also give use to his new jersey.
“You will definitely see me in my rainbow jersey this season. I plan to ride the US World Cups and the Test Event for the Paris Olympic Games is also on the schedule," he says of the coming months before a winter break. The World Cup in Andorra comes too soon.”
