Ahead of the Dublin World Cup, Cameron Mason also competed in the race in the X2O Trophy Kortrijk on Saturday. Ultimately, the Briton finished third in the cross, behind Lars van der Haar and winner Eli Iserbyt.
"The tactics of Eli and Michael helped me a bit to get back into the first group," said Mason. "Once I got there, it was quite chaotic. I saw what they were doing. Lars is very experienced: he paid very close attention to the gears. I was always on the fence, but everyone was at their limit. Everyone made mistakes, including me. But I am very happy with this third place."
At one point in the race Mason took the initiative, but then crashed in first position. "I felt like a bit of an idiot. But that's how it goes. You sit at the front and give everything. That is the moment when mistakes are made. It was a difficult part for me, just like the part after it, where you had to jump on your bike very quickly. I was often at my limit there, but I showed my level today with a podium finish."
On Sunday, Mason will be at the start of the Dublin World Cup again. He thinks it is special to race in the Irish capital. "There will be a lot of home crowds from Great Britain, but the Irish crowd are also great fans and wonderful people. So I'm looking forward to it."
