Lucinda Brand put in perhaps her best performance of the cyclocross season so far and takes motivation from it. She was able to directly battle with Fem van Empel and Puck Pieterse, and finished second in the Kortrijk X20 Badkamers Trofee race.
“It went really well, so I'm happy with that. This is only my third weekend, but I still feel like I'm getting better. I can maintain my accelerations longer and longer. If I can keep this up, I have a nice end of the year ahead of me," Brand said in a post-race interview. The Dutch rider kept up with the early accelerations of Fem van Empel and Puck Pieterse and that immediately gave her hope of doing something more.
She even attacked the young Dutch duo during the race, trying to make the difference instead of racing defensively. “Fem and Puck both went into the pit, so I thought: I have to take my chance, who knows, maybe they will look at each other. But in the end Fem came back quickly.” It wasn't too quickly however, the World Champion did soar to the win but Brand managed to finish second ahead of Pieterse who is not too far off her compatriot's abilities. This earns her already a third place in the cup, despite having missed the first round.
Brand will be having a very busy weekend that is not far from the start. She will take part in tomorrow's World Cup race in Dublin, Ireland, and will have to make the preparations and trip still today before getting to know the track tomorrow. “I do have to hurry up a bit, but luckily not in triple gear. Logistically, Amsterdam was the best option, because then I could go straight back home on Sunday evening. I'll be on the plane at nine o'clock," she concluded.
