Mathieu van der Poel was the main favourite to win the cyclocross
world championships and succeeded.
Joris Nieuwenhuis was the best of the rest, but perhaps rode a race that was just as impressive into second place.
“It also made me very happy about this World Championships. I'm not going to say I didn't have any tension, because I did. I dare to admit that honestly," Nieuwenhuis said in a post-race interview with Wielerflits. "But it wasn't necessary. That tension was not necessarily there for a specific classification, but simply for competing in a World Championships. If you think rationally, a World Championship is an ordinary race, but that is not the case. There is a magical atmosphere around it.”
It was a race that opened up right from the get go. The Dutchman opened a gap on his main rivals in the first two laps, and his goal was to then sustain it. He did not try to follow Mathieu van der Poel at all costs, but admits that he put in a massive effort in the first half of the race. "Of course I also knew how I felt at that moment. I told myself: I shouldn't go over that limit. But I kind of did that anyway. In my head I was really concerned with making the gap behind me as big as possible."
However, regardless of it being the best tactic or not, it proved to be a successful one. Despite the late surge from Michael Vanthourenhout, Nieuwenhuis was able to remain in position for a silver medal, and was the only rider to finish within a minute of van der Poel. "Of course I have to be there if something happens, but I was just busy with my own race.”
