Wout van Aert was in the breakaway in the mountain stage of the
Tour de France. Although he did not secure the top positions, he was able to compensate with the 20 points he scored along the way.
In an interview with Sporza, When asked why he decided to join the breakaway, he said," there was a group with McNulty and Castroviejo in the attack. They are the domestiques of the competition, and we didn't want that to happen. I joined in and ended up at the front of the breakaway. In the end, I was also able to pick up the points in the intermediate sprint, it would have been stupid to leave them behind. That's a nice bonus. But I didn't have the legs to do anything, not even for my teammates. That was a shame."
Bob Jungels, the stage winner of the ninth stage, was also the part of breakaway riding along with Van Aert, "He was spinning strongly. His attack attempt was very ambitious with a long distance to go, but he apparently held on and then you can only say chapeau," concludes Van Aert.
