After a second place in the opening stage, UAE Team Emirate's Matteo Trentin finishes just one step short of stage again. Although this time, he wasn't as close as it may seem, because the Italian initally crossed the line in 4th, but later in the evening, Sam Bennett and Dylan Groenewegen were relegated for irregular sprint.
"It was a hectic final," the 33-year-old rider begins his analysis for Eurosport immediately after the finish, not knowing of the double relegation. "After two difficult days in which things went very quickly, things went a bit calmer today. There was more stress among the GC riders than among the sprinters. After all, they all wanted to sit in the front to avoid falls. So the sprinters actually already knew that things wouldn't be so easy."
"I'm happy with fourth place. I had a relaxed day. It was leaning back until seven kilometers from the finish. My teammates helped me a lot with positioning. Moreover, they kept me out of the danger zone throughout the final phase," he praises Ivo Oliviera and Felix Großschartner, among others.
“In last corners I made some mistakes and it became a bit more difficult to get on the right wheel. I was also a bit too slow in the sprint, but a fourth place is of course still good," he concludes in a self-critical but satisfied way.
