Just a few days ago,
Jens Voigt was proclaiming the end of
Primoz Roglic's Maglia Rosa charge, suggesting the Slovenian should try to focus on securing a podium instead. Now though, Voigt admits he may have been a bit premature with his prediction.
“I didn’t think Roglic would be strong enough, but he is still in the fight," the 51-year-old former
Giro d'Italia stage winner revealed as part of Eurosport's coverage of the race. "He is a bit less explosive, but he proved me wrong and is still in the game."
Roglic's exploits on stage 18 may not have cut his time gap to the Maglia Rosa of
Geraint Thomas, but the
Jumbo-Visma leader did put Joao Almeida in trouble and as such started the say in second overall just 29 seconds down on Thomas. According to Voigt, the Welshman's lead is an incredibly precarious one with the Dolomites on the horizon.
“If Geraint has any mishap, dropping the chain, a puncture in a bad moment or just not feeling 100%, 30 seconds can be quick to lose," says Voigt. "So it’s far from over but at the moment it all looks very good for Geraint Thomas.”
