“I was in contact with a couple different teams" - Matteo Jorgenson explains why Team Visma | Lease a Bike was an 'easy decision'

In the coming weeks, Matteo Jorgenson will begin his 2024 campaign, the first of a new era in his career after the American star moved from Movistar Team to Team Visma | Lease a Bike over the off-season.

“I was in contact with a couple different teams, and I chose Jumbo, because I think our mentalities line up the closest,” says the 24-year-old in conversation with Velo, explaining why Team Visma | Lease a Bike stood out over the rest when it came to talks over Jorgenson's future. “From what I can tell they’re 100% invested in performance. And they spend most of their budget and trying to get the most out of the riders and have the most staff and perform the best."

Jorgenson had some standout performances at the beginning of the 2023 season, including overall victory at the Tour of Oman and second overall at the Tour de Romandie. With his move to the all-conquering Team Visma | Lease a Bike, Jorgenson now feels he's perfectly placed to take the next step in his development. “So for me, it just seemed like an easy decision,” he explains. “For me, it’s more about seeing, the best version of myself. That’s what I’m most excited for and that’s kind of what gets me up in the morning.”

“A combination of his personality and his qualities as a rider,” adds the team's sports director, Merijn Zeeman when asked what attracted them to the American. “First off, most important for us, was his mindset and his eagerness to get better, and what we can offer, training wise, equipment wise, nutrition wise, and having a real strong lineup of riders who are super professional, that’s what he was looking for.”
