Attacking, exciting and forcing the pace in the breakaway yet again at the 2024 Giro d'Italia, Julian Alaphilippe couldn't quite get himself a second stage win of the race, eventually crossing the line in ninth-position.
"I feel like I gave it everything today. So I can't have any regrets," the 31-year-old Frenchman, who triumphed in spectacular style on stage 12 from the breakaway with an attack from around 120km out, reflected in his post-stage interview with Eurosport afterwards. "I really had no juice left in my legs."
Despite having no regrets about his own performance, Alaphilippe was left a little disappointed in the attitudes of his rivals during the day, especially after the eventual stage winner, Andrea Vendrame of the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team launched what turned out to be his stage-winning attack with around 30 kilometres of the day to go.
“Andrea Vendrame rode a good descent, but my breakaway companions were more concerned about me," Alaphilippe laments in conclusion. "So it became very difficult to win.”
