18-year-old Swiss junior in very critical condition after a hard crash during Women Junior World Road Race Championships

Cat Ferguson emerged victorious from her battle for the junior Worlds double at the head of the race in Zurich. However away from TV cameras, even more dramatic scenes took place. Double runner-up from Swiss National Championships this year - Muriel Furrier - crashed very badly.

Furrier had to be helicopter transported to hospital to have her injuries treated immediately. While details of her fall remain unknown, the UCI confirmed that her condition is still very serious. On the wet and twisty downhills near the Zurich lake, the 18-year-old cyclist was neither first nor last to struggle to stay upright. Let's just hope for the best news...

Press release on the mattter from UCI follows:

"Swiss rider Muriel Furrer fell heavily today, Thursday 26 September, during the Women Junior road race at the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships in Zurich (Switzerland) for reasons still to be determined. Muriel Furrer was taken to hospital by an emergency helicopter. She suffered a serious head injury and is in a very critical condition.

Extremely concerned by the situation, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), Swiss Cycling and the Zurich 2024 Local Organising Committee are closely monitoring developments and will communicate as soon as possible.

At present, there are no established facts regarding how the accident happened. Investigations by the competent authorities are ongoing. For this reason, no further information can be given until further notice."
