Giro d'Italia 2024 stage 15 GC Update | Tadej Pogacar leads with over 6 minutes; Geraint Thomas stays in second; Einer Rubio and Jan Hirt enter Top10

Stage 15 of the Giro d'Italia 2024 would give no respite to the riders in the general classification despite the fact that not 24 hours earlier they gave everything in the last individual time trial of the Corsa Rosa, which although Filippo Ganna won and Tadej Pogacar managed to put more time on all his rivals for the maglia rosa. On Sunday, moreover, the UAE Team Emirates star was to finish the fight for the overall with a victory that will be engraved in the most memorable pages of cycling history.

For more than 220 kilometers, Nairo Quintana was part of a breakaway in which the Movistar Team rider would end up leading alone after countering an attack by Georg Steinhauser. However, although the Colombian put in a spectacular performance throughout the stage, worthy of the victory, Quintana was unaware of what was coming up behind him.

In the peloton, seeing that he only had Rafal Majka as a domestique, Tadej Pogacar launched an attack that left behind all his main rivals for the overall: Geraint Thomas (2nd), Daniel Martinez (3rd), Ben O'Connor (4th), Antonio Tiberi (5th) and Thymen Arensman (6th), who were the only ones whose position remained unchanged after the stage, although Tiberi shed some important time to his rvials.

With this attack, the Slovenian practically definitively sentenced the Giro d'Italia. Thomas and Martinez, the closest competitors after Romain Bardet who returned to his best form, arrived almost three minutes after the pink jersey and it can be said that any realistic ambition of winning the Giro as been thrown out the window.

Bardet's strong performance saw him overtake Filippo Zana in the fight for the 7th place. The Italian is eighth but now has two riders who are in great form closely following him. In 9th and 10th are Einer Rubio and Jan Hirt, each riders who performed very strongly today and managed to climb two and three spots respectively. Lorenzo Fortunato descended from 9th to 11th after a rough day in the mountains, whilst 10th place Alex Baudin cracked and is now 16th. A positive note on Polti Kometa's Davide Piganzoli who climbed from 13th to 18th.
