Medical Report and withdrawals Giro d'Italia 2024 | Update stage 14: Magnus Sheffield crashes at high-speed during time-trial

Throughout the Giro d'Italia, there will be many riders to withdraw from the race, for several different reasons. We make a list of all riders who leave the Corsa Rosa, as well as list out a few of the main crashes that take place during the race.

Stage 1

No riders have abandoned the race on it's first day, but that does not mean there weren't victims in what was a chaotic day in terms of action. Robert Gesink, Domenico Pozzovivo and Torstein Traeen were among those who hit the deck. The latter suffered a large wound in the knee and was the worst off from the opening day of the race.

Stage 2

At the start of the second day, there was one rider less in the peloton. No rider crashed out of the race, but Robert Gesink did not start the day after having been diagnosed with a hand fracture. Eddie Dunbar and Olav Kooij crashed on the day suffering meaningful injuries; whilst Tadej Pogacar also hit the deck at the base of the Santuario di Oropa climb.

Stage 3

The third day of racing began without the rider who was the race's first big casualty. Eddie Dunbar of Team Jayco AlUla crashed on the second day and was a DNS on the third day due to a knee injury. Simon Carr of EF Education-EasyPost was the first rider to start and not finish a stage, also suffering from knee issues according to the American team.

Stage 4

A disastrous day for some at the Giro, in a day that was marked by the rain and a dangerous descent. Due to fever and a cough, DSM's Bram Welten did not start the stage. Torstein Traeen of Bahrain - Victorious abandoned following the crash he suffered on the first day of the race; and Biniam Girmay abandoned after falling twice with just over 60 kilometers to go. It is assumed that he has suffered a hip injury.

The mass crash that affected the day also saw the following riders as confirmed to have fallen: Ben O'Connor, Damien Touzé, Matteo Trentin, Einer Rubio and Fernando Gaviria. Former race leader Jhonatan Narváez was also involved in a minor crash.

Stage 5

Adrien Petit was the only rider to abandon on the fifth day of racing due to 'feeling unwell'. However over the day there were plenty crashes that involved riders such as Cristophe Laporte, Riley Pickrell, Attila Valter, Michael Woods, Nadav Raisberg, Tobias Foss, Alan Riou, Lorenzo Milesi, Giovanni Lonardi, Davide Piganzoli, Henok Mulubrhan and Tobias Lund Andresen.

Stage 6

The day started off without four riders. BORA-hansgrohe's Florian Lipowitz abandoned the race with an illness with Israel - Premier Tech saw three of it's riders stay off the road after yesterday's crash. RIley Pickrell required stitches in the nose after falling on his face; Nadav Raisberg suffered a hand fracture whilst Michael Woods suffered signs of minor concussion and the team removed all three as a precaution.

Damiano Caruso crashed and lost hopes of GC result at the end of the race. The likes of Juan Pedro López and Will Barta also hit the deck during the day.

Stage 7

Despite being a 40-kilometer time-trial day, not all riders managed to get through the day unscathed. Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL sprinter Tobias Lund Andresen crashed during his effort; however he seemingly escaped without any meaningful injury.

Stage 8

A calm day on the bike when it came to tension, the peloton began to break apart right from the start and the riders did not find technical descents or areas where positioning was the key. Mikkel Honoré, who is already racing with a broken rib from a crash earlier in the week, did fall today but no rider abandoned during the day. Christophe Laporte did not start the stage, still suffering from the injuries suffered on stage 5.

Stage 9

Due to illness over the first week of the Giro Alexey Lutsenko has not been at his best level, and despite being close to the Top10 he did not start the ninth stage of the race. During the day there weren't many crashes but noticeably Geraint Thomas hit the deck together with Max Schachmann. Martin Marcellusi was also involved in a high-speed crash close to the finish. Tudor's Alexander Krieger also abandoned during the stage.

Stage 10

Despite the rest day, plenty riders could not recover from illnesses that they got late in the first week of the race. Four riders did not take to the start on stage 10, surprisingly every single one of them being sprinters: Olav Kooij, Max Kanter, Marius Mayrhofer and Ethan Vernon. Respiratory infections were present in several of them, and Cian Uijtdebroeks also admitted that he has come down with illness. However when it comes to crashes it was a rather calm day with good weather and non-technical roads; Louis Barré did hit the deck.

Stage 11

Three riders did not take to the start of the stage. Arkéa's Louis Barré was suffering from effects of his crash in the previous day; Stefano Oldani of Cofidis was ill but most importantly so was Cian Uijtdebroeks. The Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider was sitting in fifth position after yesterday but came down with effects of an illness as did his teammate Olav Kooij.

Throughout the day Kevin Vermaerke and Felix Grossschartner were among the riders involved in a crash; whilst in the final sprint a few more riders hit the deck. Fabio Jakobsen and Tobias Lund Andresen of DSM both went down in another disastrous day for the team; Madis Mihkels and Jenthe Biermans were also involved.

Stage 12

The stage was rather stable when it came to incidents. No rider abandoned but one did not take to the start: That was Fabio Jakobsen who was suffering from the crash suffered the day before.

Stage 13

For the first time in a while, no-one has abandoned the race at the Giro. During the 13th stage of the race however not all rider managed to remain unscathed; a crash with 20 kilometers to go saw at least the following riders crash: Will Barta, Rubén Fernãndez, Ewen Costiou, Nairo Quintana, David Dekker, Mattia Bais, Esteban Chaves, Filippo Zana and Pelayo Sánchez.

Stage 14

The 14th stage's time-trial began without two riders who finished on the previous days. These are two sprinters who abandon the race to focus on the Tour de France: Phil Bauhaus and Luka Mezgec. No-one abandoned throughout the time-trial but American Magnus Sheffield did crash whilst racing for one of the top times.
