Giro d'Italia sees it's first withdraw - Robert Gesink does not start stage 2 after injuries suffered on opening day crash

The Giro d'Italia has lost it's first rider. Robert Gesink of Team Visma | Lease a Bike will not start stage 2 after crashing on the opening day and officially the first rider to leave the Corsa Rosa.

Team Visma | Lease a Bike confirmed the news this morning: "Following his crash yesterday, Robert Gesink sustained a small fracture in his hand. He is forced to abandon the Giro d’Italia."

Despite being a short day on the bike and without too much tension, a few riders have suffered crashes. Out of these, it was assumed that Bahrain - Victorious' Torstein Traeen was the most badly hurt, but seemingly it was not the case.

Gesink was starting his 23rd Grand Tour and was expected to be an important support rider for Cian Uijtdebroeks and Olav Kooij. The Dutchman has been racing Grand Tours for over decade and a half already, but will not reach the end of this year's Giro.
