Alexey Lutsenko made a last-minute change to race the Giro d'Italia, in the absence of many GC contenders, but the first week was far from ideal and the Kazakh race is not starting the race this Sunday.
The leaders of Astana Qazaqstan Team did not show up at the signing for this morning's ninth stage of the race. Although it was a very different day of racing, Lutsenko climbed Prati di Tivo over two minutes slower this Saturday than a month ago when he won the queen stage of the Giro d'Abruzzo over Adam Yates.
It is a big blow for Astana who seek to score as many GC points as possible in a dash to try and stay at World Tour level. Lutsenko finished the day 11th in the overall classification; but the team can still rely on a surprising Lorenzo Fortunato who has ridden himself into a 7th spot at the end of the first week of the race.
“Unfortunately, Alexey will not be able to continue the Giro d’Italia because of sinusitis and acute febrile pharyngo-tracheitis," team doctor Emilio Magni said in a press release. "It was decided this morning after the final check of his current state”
