He gave it everything! @jakob_fuglsang secured third overall at @tds after an impressive week of racing from our Danish leader and the whole team 👊 #TourdeSuisse2022
Jakob Fuglsang had, as did Israel - Premier Tech, a very complicated start to 2022 with very little results to show for. However, in the second block of the season, the Dane has returned to a very high level, a position solidified after his third place in the Tour de Suisse.
“In general, I’m satisfied with my day and, in the end, also with my Tour de Suisse. I tried on many stages, compared to many other guys. I was maybe one of the few ones who actually tried something," Fuglsang said after the finale of the race. "We were probably one of the strongest teams for animating the race and I think, as a team, we rode really well with what we had here. I gave everything I had.”
Fuglsang ended the Tour de Suisse in third place, bringing 325 points towards Israel - Premier Tech's tally which are crucial for the team's fight for maintenance, but above all proving the 37-year old is not done in the peloton. After a win at the Mercan'Tour Classic, Fuglsang showed equally good form in Switzerland, attacking in the hilly stages of the race, and holding a very strong level on the high Alpine ascents. He rode two days in the yellow jersey after Aleksandr Vlasov's abandon, and rode a strong time-trial which has almost seen him rise to second position.
“Looking back, maybe it would have been smart to give Thomas the jersey, so his team would have had to control the race," he said looking back on the seventh stage. "However, it is always easy to be clever afterward. I have no regrets. I knew it would be difficult to beat Thomas in this TT.”
“I have given everything this week. It was not enough in the end. I didn’t take the jersey with me home, so I will have to come back another year to go for the win again," he concluded.
