I would expect him to try for red jersey start to finish, just to make it interesting - since it's obvious he's going to win barring crash or sickness. Or do the whole thing holding his breath, or riding no hands. It'll be stupifyingly boring if he wraps up the GC inside the first week but hopefully the rest of the contenders can fight it out like he isn't there and make it feel like something unexpected could happen. Which is nuts when you think about it. They won all three GTs in a single year, and filled the podium of the last one with the other two winners. It was unprecedented. But then lost several key team-mates to retirement (medically-forced or otherwise), and the wheels just came off a bit. I find it hard to believe that they can't scrape up a new title sponsor when there's so many other teams who (with all due respect) win f*ck-all compared to them, and don't have the name recognition and stand-out riders that a sponsor would want. He's won two of the last three grand tours, plus two week-long stage races - as someone else said, 51 race days this season. That's not nothing. He's a leader in his team, why would he be expected to go to a long-ass one day race where he has no prior form, and do what? ride on the front like the domestique he isn't? If you apply this kind of non-logic to any other GC rider in the peloton it sounds like nonsense. People just can't get over their dislike of him personally for not being a gung-ho lad who wants to race everything, win everything, dominate everything in a overt fashion. It all smacks of boiling jealousy from never-were keyboard warriors who cant stand that he gets paid millions of Euros to win races, and does so - but doesn't appear sufficiently "grateful" about it or whatever. Certainly helps to not have the whole thing feel like a somewhat forgone conclusion. Not having the processional final stage is much better IMO. More high stakes racing, right to the last gasp.11-08-2026 03:08

I'm interested to know what Visma will do with him. They seem to be able to get new things out of riders they pick up, so maybe he's got as of yet untapped utility to them doing something else besides purely sprinting. At least they probably got him fairly cheap.07-08-2026 02:03
