- Proven doper ? Which court of justice has established that ? Let’s have the humility to say that you and I (and probably all the readers on the site) dont know for sure what the reality really was. That goes for Eddy, Pogacar and many champions.
- In the Merckx time he was able to stay ahead of a chasing peleton on flat terrain, not because he was so fantastic but because no-one cared or was capable, it was a time where you could combine sprinting with climbing and the top 10 of the tour were also in the top 50 of Paris Roubaix and vice versa. You could win a lot lore because it was the same group of rider again and again for classics, sprints or GCs
Times were different.
- These Merckx fanboys, himself included are starting to sound pathetic.
Just enjoy the sport instead of all these comparisons and how in the old days the men were real men and competition was tougher etc etc.
He is starting to look like a cat in a corner trying to defend his legacy
Who is the greatest cyclist, I used to think Merckx but now I am not so certain who to name, Pogacar is not finished cycling and Merckx ... well certainly such a whiner can't be named the greatest of all time.
- Just because the doping wasn't as effective as what came later doesn't mean it wasn't effective for its time. Look at EPO - all that craziness and those deaths, and people are now riding faster because they've decided to be professional about endurance, recovery, nutrition, carb loads, aero, and more. Doesn't change that EPO was an evil drug that nearly destroyed the sport. And Merckx? He doped, got caught multiple times, but those were different times. In this era, he'd have been suspended or banned, and would never had had the wins he does. That's nothing against him, it's just a comparison of ages and consequences for doping in each.
- PFP has the most beautifully efficient style. In the last couple of hours of the TDFF there was little else to watch other than her perfect style relative to her rivals.
But re the weight issue, it's not that she did anything wrong, but she seemed out of touch with the efforts so many people were making to inspire young people with a healthy image. Her face looked like she was seriously ill. In contrast, even Jonas had put on impressive new weight for the Tour, and made it clear that he was enjoying himself much more like that.
- You are free to ride at whatever weight yields the best result. She lost weight and maintained power.Thats a win win and lo and behold she won the Tour.Whats the issue here?
- As usual people overreacting to someones comments about anything nowadays just to bring attention to their own posts. This is the ludicrous new reality of the internet.
- The Tour is a competition. The best way to improve is through your fitness level combined with being as light as possible.Anyone who implies that someone is "unhealthy" even while being super fit to win the hardest stage race in the world is delusional and and unsportswoman like.Train harder and drop 5 pounds and stop whineing. If you win next year 5 or ten pounds lighter you wont be complaining about it.
- Fights do it all the time. Sounds like sour grapes. Stop the petty nonsense
- shocking, a Portuguese person stating a Portuguese rider is better than a Belgian. he might be, but still a funny premise to an article.
