Fabio Jakobsen and Dylan Groenewegen were the protagonists of one of the most dramatic events in modern cycling. With serious physical and psychological issues for both, no-one won with the situation, however both have made a return to the very top of the cycling world.
“I said Dylan's win left me cold. It's all about performance. I understand, of course, that he and his family have also been going through a very difficult time. I have a lot of respect for that. I was a little frustrated. So hereby my apologies," Jakobsen told Dutch news outlet NOS at the end of stage four.
The day before, Jakobsen said that he had lost his respect for Dylan Groenewegen after the crash that almost ended his life at the Tour de Pologne back in 2020. An understandable statement for many, however one that the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team sprinter took back outside of the heat of the moment.
The two Dutch riders were the winners of both bunch sprints so far at the Tour de France, and will continue to be riders to watch over the next few weeks on the flat stages.
