Fabio Jakobsen won the second stage of the Tour de France with a dominant sprint, however he could not repeat the feat on stage three as he lost his position in the peloton at a crucial time, and had to settle for a minor place.
“Yeah, I think he shows that he's a good sprinter. I have to say that before the crash I admired his palmarès and I kind of looked up to him a bit. But now that is completely gone after the crash because of the mistake he made. I think that's normal," Jakobsen said at the finish after seeing his compatriot take the win in Sønderborg. "So it’s nice for him to win but it doesn’t really affect me".
The Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team rider only managed to ride to a fifth place, after loosing his leadout in a crucial mistake in the final corner. Jakobsen then had to claw back some places in the final few meters, but could not contest for a second stage win. “I think the team until the last corner did a perfect job. All the guys pulled very hard - I was quite easy on the wheels. But then I think in the last corner we should have stayed a bit more on the right with Florian so nobody could pass," he described.
With Wout van Aert once again finishing second Jakobsen lost ground in the fight for the green jersey - now 17 points behind. “I chose to remain calm - hope that Michael Mørkøv would swing out. Unfortunately he thought I was on the wheel. I was not. I think there I lost my chance to sprint for the win because I was just too far back. This is also sprinting but you can understand that I'm a little bit frustrated. I know I've got it in my legs, the speed is there, just need to be able to get out and then go for the line," he concluded.
