For Matteo Jorgenson, today was another day ticked off from Paris-Nice. The Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider has found himself in the lead of the race after seven days of perfect and consistent riding, and today in Auron he withstood another set of attacks in the snow.
Visma kept the American safe in the lead up until the final ascent, and then when it came to his own legs, he defended himself strongly. Florian Lipowitz gained 3 seconds in a dash to the line, but nothing that will make a significant difference when the riders return to Nice tomorrow afternoon.
But Jorgenson, despite a good day, has his focus already on tomorrow's stage: “Paris-Nice is not over until it’s over. The last weekend around Nice is always stressful. I knew that, so I was ready for it," he said in a post-race interview. "It wasn’t easy, but it was better than yesterday. I had it under control, as much as you can when you’re driving to a ski resort in the snow. I was suffering along with everyone else, but I felt completely in control.”
37 seconds separate him and Lipowitz into the final explosive stage, but the roads will dry out, leaving less room for surprises. With other rivals distanced either in the mountains or crosswinds, Jorgenson has more reassurance that he won't be raided.
Will the gaps be enough to defend himself? “I think so. It should be enough," he replied. "Tomorrow will be very stressful, as always. Anything can happen. But I know the roads, I train on them every day, so I’ll be as prepared as possible. But it has happened before that someone lost the yellow jersey on day eight, so it will be exciting.”
