Mads was right behind in UCI points with a GT points jersey, strong classics and 16 wins. Jonas had 4 stage wins the entire year. They probably just valued winning races more.

I don't really see the froome comparison. I know MVDP, wva, pidcock came up through cyclocross or mtn biking along with road. It's long been said that Tadej competed as a junior on terrains not suited for him. Still, at 17 was 3rd in european RR juniors championship, 13th at roubaix jrs, and national TT jrs champ. Froome came on late at 21 and broke through with sky 5 years later. Hard to compare winning at uci level at 25 vs 19. Tadej's closest comp was bernal imo.
