INEOS Grenadiers took hold of the final kilometers of stage 4 at the Giro d'Italia, not looking to attack the race but instead keep it controlled and keep the GC as it was. It was a decent first test for the GC riders, and Geraint Thomas reports good feedback.
“Everything went according to plan. It's good to have such a ride in the legs. I actually enjoyed it," Thomas said at the end of the day. The GC fight didn't open so there wasn't much to compare with rivals, however the Welshman was satisfied with the outcome of the day. “I can't say much about the opposition yet, certainly not after today's ride. We really look at it day by day. I am certainly not looking too far ahead.”
Thomas starts the Giro with the need to still build some form and the conservative riding over the ascent to Colle Molella ensures that he has not lost time. Stage 7 to Gran Sasso d'Italia will then be the first real climbing test for the GC contenders, by which time the 36-year old hopes to have better legs. Nevertheless, the first decisive mountain stage will come on the 13th day as the riders head into Switzerland and the Alps.
“The legs felt pretty good today. I hope to get even better, but I won't get an answer until next week. For now it is going well," he concluded. Thomas lost a spot in the overall classification and is now sixth however that is due to the breakaway success which saw both Andreas Leknessund and Aurélien Paret-Peintre jump into the first spots.
