Vuelta a Espana 2026 Classifications Update Stage 19 - Mas keeps red jersey over Roglic and Gall, whilst Richard Carapaz threatens to blow up the race

The first red jersey of the 2026 Vuelta a Espana will be decided immediately in Monaco, where a 9.4-kilometre individual time trial opens a race featuring more than 58,000 metres of climbing, repeated summit finishes and a second race against the clock later in the final week.
This live classifications hub will be updated after every stage with the latest General Classification, Points Classification, Mountains Classification and Best Young Rider standings, tracking the fight for the red, green, polka-dot and white jerseys from Stage 1 on August 22 through to the final stage in Granada on September 13.
The overall battle will be shaped by repeated opportunities for the climbers, from the early Pyrenean and Andorran tests to Calar Alto, Sierra de la Pandera, Penas Blancas and the decisive Collado del Alguacil. The two individual time trials and bonus seconds provide further chances for the gaps between the main contenders to change.
Sprint finishes and intermediate sprints will drive the points competition, breakaways can quickly transform the mountains standings and the white jersey will develop alongside many of the same stages that decide the general classification. Each update will show the latest standings after the day's racing and highlight the important changes across all four competitions.

General Classification Standings after Stage 19
The overall classification has been heavily battled today, although at the finish line there were no significant differences. Richard Carapaz, Oscar Onley and Primoz Roglic were all on the move in the early climbs of the day, trying to raid Enric Mas and Movistar.
The Spaniard responded promptly, not letting Roglic and Felix Gall gain ground at any point of the day. On the final ascent, he also responded to all attacks, maintaining his 1:37-minute lead over Primoz Roglic ahead of the queen stage of the race. Felix Gall remains in third position, 3:01 minutes back.
Richard Carapaz is 5:17 behind, perhaps too distant from the red jersey, but within reach of the podium if he succeeds with an early attack over the coming days. Oscar Onley and Jakob Omrzel are fifth and sixth whilst fighting for the youth classification.
Clément Berthet remains in seventh place, slightly extending his gap to Cristián Rodríguez behind; whilst the Spaniard overtook Mattias Skjelmose on the GC in the final climb. Harold Tejada closes out the Top10 whilst Sepp Kuss is within a minute of returning to it on the final mountain day.

Points Classification Standings after Stage 19
The points classification has not changed today, with Wout Van Aert remaining in the lead with a solid 306 points, over his teammate Matthew Brennan's 239. The two Visma riders will likely score points on the final stage of the race; whilst the remainder of the positions are filled out by their rivals.

King of the Mountains Classification Standings after Stage 19
Santiago Buitrago's efforts didn't earn him a stage win but they did earn him an increase in the lead of the KOM classification. Whilst it is not mathematically confirmed, it is virtually confirmed by the Colombian who, with his 78 points, now leads Wout Van Aert who is second with 40 points. The final mountain stage favours the Bahrain - Victorious rider.

Youth Classification Standings after Stage 19
Oscar Onley did not respond to the attack of Jakob Omrzel towards the end of the stage, and the Slovenian's rise in form means that the youth classification is far from over. With 1:03 minutes difference between the two, the queen stage could still see differences being created, whilst today Onley won six seconds at the finish line.

- It’s no way as simple as supply and demand either. Every sport has its own financial ecosystem with different rewarding mechanisms. Tennis is a certain mix of quantity and performance, athletics is a different mix of both, in neither do salaries come into play. In cycling and football, salary is determinant with the difference that athletes have enormous resale value in one and almost never any in the other. Tadej had nowhere near the demand, popularity, attractiveness or other marketable values of Bolt and yet he earns way more despite being known and followed by probably less than 10% of Bolts’ audience numbers ( who also paid to see him). Many of Bolt’s appearances were free, his revenues related to appearances rarely topped $1m/y, most revenues came from endorsements. For a sport nobody pays for, I think cyclists do very well these days. They’re lucky there’s still a lot of easy money floating around (in certain circles). Josh Kerr (don’t worry if you’ve never heard of him, not worth digging) recently started advocating for allowing betting in athletics, obviously desperate, just when football is having its conscience crisis about banning advertisement and sponsorship by non recognised betting companies.Jumpyjohn11-09-2026

- If you ride a bike and consider the behaviour of some in cars you can quite easily stretch your imagination a bit to see some part of their brain isn’t functioning properly. In fact, you also notice it quite often in amateur racing. It may be attitude towards risk and respect have changed over the generations so different generations may have problems agreeing what is normal today. Taking huge risks when it concerns only your life is poor judgement when it goes wrong, doing it when it affects others signals something went permanently wrong with judgement along the way, it’s less poor judgement than a complete inability or disregard for judgement or understanding of consequences.
