In 2023, the first stage of Gran Camiño was neutralized; whilst stages 2, 3 and 4 were won by Jonas Vingegaard. 2024 is a copy paste of the previous year, and Vingegaard sealed the overall win today at Monte Aloia.
“The legs felt very good and the shape is good. I feel I am ready for Tirreno-Adriatico, but the most important thing now is not to get sick," VIngegaard told Wielerflits after his win. "And I shouldn't do anything stupid in the coming week, because I am happy with my form level and how the team has raced. I'm glad I was able to pay that back.”
Although it was the shortest gap that he's won with this week, Vingegaard had nothing more to prove arriving at the summit of the climb on this final day. In two rainy, cold and hilly days on stages 2 and 3 the Dane attacked in unfamiliar fashion but dominated the stages having by far the superior legs.
The rain hampered riders this week, but it was not an obstacle that could take him down: “It wasn't super cold, but if we had had to do another descent, it would have been really cold. And there was also a lot of wind. In some places it looked like trees were about to fall. It was the best decision to shorten the stage.” The stage was cut and the final climb was only ridden once, but that was enough for Vingegaard to make the difference.
“On the last climb we caught the last escapees and went for the stage win. Until three kilometers below the top we were still together with a group of favorites, then the attacks started," he explains. "I saw a good time to go and luckily no one could follow. From there it was just a matter of persevering until the finish." Hence, a third stage win, only with youngster Lenny Martínez coming anywhere near close.
Hence he prepares for the spring stage-races with a golden performance, which may see him return again next year although the weather may certainly change his plans. “It's a shame, especially for the organization. It is the second year in a row that there has been bad weather," he concludes. "I would have preferred to ride the entire race. Will I come back next year? I think I'll first look at the weather forecast. We'll see that again next year."
