INEOS Grenadiers took over the responsibility over the finale of stage 4 which saw the ascent of Colle Molella.
Geraint Thomas is eager to discover his true form on the first summit finish of the
Giro d'Italia at Gran Sasso d'Italia, where his role in the team may also change.
"It's going to be a long day on Friday. The climbs are not super tough, but it will be the first big test. So far we feel good and we want to continue on that path," Thomas said. He starts the day in sixth place in the overall classification, 58 seconds down on Remco Evenepoel after having avoided time losses over the past few days.
The Welshman had a tense finale last afternoon as he suffered a mechanical close to the line, however with the support of his team he regained position in the peloton. He sits only four seconds ahead of Tao Geoghegan Hart in the overall classification, however judging by recent results it would be expected that the order would change.
With both Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic expressing conservative feelings towards today's finale it may be up to the other teams to push the pace if they are interested, or perhaps go on the attack in the very long final ascent. Either way the tough final kilometers at altitude will be very complicated and even if small, some differences are expected to be created.
