After Jonas Vingegaard went clear on the San Giacomo climb on stage 5 of Tirreno-Adriatico, Jai Hindley looked to be the strongest of the GC contenders in the group behind, as he briefly went clear with Ben O’Connor as they attempted to chase down the Danish rider.
After the two Australian riders were caught before the top of the climb, Hindley stayed in the group on the fast descent. In the final few hundred metres, the BORA - hansgrohe rider led out the sprint to the line and looked like he was going to take second place on the stage.
However, Hindley was overtaken by Juan Ayuso within sight of the line and was forced to settle for third, with four bonus seconds going his way as he moved up to third overall in the general classification.
On his performance, Hindley said “the last climb was very hard. There was a small group at the top, we got to the end and I finished third. It’s not so bad, we’ll see what we can do with it”.
