Jonas Vingegaard has put a statement on the road. He has won stage 5 of
Tirreno-Adriatico after an attack with 29 kilometers to go, and was entirely above the rest of the competition.
The day in Italy saw a strong breakaway go up the road right away, a strong group of 10 riders consisting of quality men: Filippo Ganna, Andrea Vendrame, Iván García Cortina, Damien Howson, Kasper Asgreen, Magnus Cort Nielsen, Niccolò Bonifazio, Simon Clarke, Alessandro De Marchi and Clément Davy.
A strong group that could go far on the day, but the peloton never let the gap grow. This was the action of Team Visma | Lease a Bike that kept a high pace all day long purposefully, so as to set up an attack of Jonas Vingegaard in traditional fashion. Throughout the day this pace caused casualties in the peloton; whilst in the front group a few riders were also dropped before the decisive climb to San Giacomo.
Andrea Vendrame launched an attack from the front in the opening kilometers to be the last survivor of the breakaway, but he was caught soon after. All of the breakaway was reeled in finally as Attila Valter and Ben Tulett set a blistering pace that split the peloton into a small group. Jonas Vingegaard decided to attack with 29 kilometers to go, immediatelly getting a big gap over the competition. Ben O'Connor and
Jai Hindley initially responded and created the chase group.
O'Connor was dropped, but then both were caught by the group behind that was being led by Isaac Del Toro who was pulling for
Juan Ayuso. Thymen Arensman, Cian Uijtdebroeks and Iván Sosa were also part of it. The latter was dropped after overcooking a corner in the descent. The group collaborated afterwards but the damage was done and Vingegaard despite being alone was not losing any time in the slight ascent to the finish.
Over a minute behind, Juan Ayuso sprinted to second place ahead of Jai Hindley.
