🇮🇹 #TirrenoAdriatico Jonas did it again!🏅
After a commanding performance by Team Visma | Lease a Bike on the slopes of the San Giacomo climb, Jonas Vingegaard launched a decisive attack with around 29km to go with nobody able to follow him, as he rode away from the leading group to take a solo victory in Valle Castellana and move into the overall lead of the race.
In the group behind, Vingegaard’s young teammate Cian Uijtdebroeks was left to defend against the other GC contenders, sitting in whilst they attempted to chase down the Danish rider.
After a fast descent, the Belgian rider entered the final few hundred metres in good position, but did not have the legs to contest the sprint for second place, as he finished towards the back of the group, with Juan Ayuso and Jai Hindley going clear to take a couple of seconds on the rest of the contenders.
In an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws after the race, Uijtdebroeks commented on the team’s performance, as he said that “for me it was a great experience to be part of such a strong team. Jonas’ attack was clever and the final he rode was also fantastic. Our plan worked. I am really very happy”.
Regarding his own race, Uijtdebroeks was disappointed not to contest the sprint, but seemed generally upbeat, as went on to say that “it was a shame that I was trapped in the final phase, but I can be satisfied with my stage”.
