It was a sign of an attack to come. Team Visma | Lease a Bike controlled today's stage at
Tirreno-Adriatico setting
Jonas Vingegaard up for an attack, and the Tour de France champion did not disappoint, taking a dominant win.
“We wanted to try it today, before tomorrow's tough stage. The plan was to put Dylan [van Baarle} and Steven [Kruiswijk} at the head of the peloton all day. On the climb it was up to Attila [Valter], after which Ben [Tulett] had to take over,” the Dane said in a post-race interview. Despite not being the hardest stage of the race, the Dutch team wanted to take the opportunity that presented itself on the road with the climb to San Giacomo.
Textbook leadout, Visma delivered Vingegaard to an attack with still 29 kilometers to go, and from there on the gap only expanded all the way into the finish. He has taken over the race lead with a large gap over the rest of the field, and will go into the queen stage already with a healthy buffer over the rest.
“I'm very happy that I could finish today. It's a nice victory," he concludes. "Whether my victory gesture had to do with International Women's Day? No, I must admit I didn't know that. It was a way for me to support my wife. I am very happy for everything she does.”
