Juan Ayuso had some possibilities of climbing back into the race lead at
Tirreno-Adriatico today but
Jonas Vingegaard was absolutely above the competition. The leader of UAE Team Emirates admit that he was already expecting it.
“I don’t think anyone was surprised. When you have one of the best teams with one of the best riders in the world, it’s… I wouldn’t say normal, but something you have to get used to seeing," Ayuso said in a post-race interview "His teammate, Ben Tulett, had already set a super high tempo. I knew it was going to happen, but no one could follow so bravo to them." Visma's tactics were simple and clear to everyone, and the climb of San Giacomo was not too difficult. But there was nothing that could be done.
Ayuso looked in some struggle at first after the attack, but eventually made it back to Ben O'Connor and Jai Hindley who also moved off the main GC group - the latter, because of Isaac Del Toro's work. The group arrived at the finish 1:12 minutes behind Vingegaard, Ayuso being the first of them across the finish line, taking the bonus seconds and even some on his other rivals.
“I think that after Vingegaard, Isaac was the strongest today. He did an extraordinary job," Ayuso thanked his teammates. "He really helped me limit the damage. Tomorrow will be another difficult day and Isaac is close to the podium, so we will see what we can do”.
