Tadej Pogacar put in another stunner of a performance on the fourth stage of the Tour de France to win his first stage of the week and 100th of his career. He beat Mathieu van der Poel in an excruciating sprint and was highly complemented by Lance Armstrong, George Hincapie and Bradley Wiggins.
In The Move podcast, looking back at what was the most important stage for the overall classification thus far, the trio has commented on the strong performances on the day based around Pogacar but also Jonas Vingegaard who resisted the attack of the World Champion in Saint-Hilaire.
Armstrong: "Exceptional Tadej Pogacar, that minute [up the climb]. This is a 2-man race, we saw that clearly today. Vingegaard was cut off, turned around, realized there was no one there and came back after being warned on the radio."
Wiggins: "What a performance. This guy won the Tour of Flanders in April and put himself in position to win Paris-Roubaix. Now he's at the Tour de France in the world champion's jersey doing this. It's unbelievable what he's doing. There are no words to describe this guy. We are running out of words".
Armstrong: "We can't say he's not the best in history looking at what he's doing. He has a great team. Great job by Almeida. I'm loving the race, it's not turning out to be what we expected, it's just being exciting in a wild way."
Hincapie: "If you look at the result it looked like a mountain stage. You have the best climbers in the world out there, but Tadej has changed the game. He's the one who changed the game, of how these people race. His level was so high that only the best climbers in the world could keep up with him. We saw UAE pulling, Visma pulling. It was a mental battle between the two teams trying to establish which is the dominant team. Tadej won, but there was equality in terms of the domestiques working for both. It was a very exciting stage".
Armstrong: "Among the first 30 finishers there were a total of 9 different times in stage 4 of the Tour de France".
Hincapie: "Indeed. We saw Remco come in 3 seconds late at the finish after the hard work he did to recover. That speaks for how hard the stage was. It was really hard. 650 watts for Tadej. Unbelievable. 2824VAM for almost 2 minutes [in the final climb], It's ridiculous."
