The Vuelta a España organizers are reported to try and assemble the highest ever Grand Tour stage win finale already this year in Sierra Nevada. With the recent finales at the Tour de France at the Col du Galibier and the Giro d'Italia at the Passo dello Stelvio, the Spanish race is seeking to reach an even more impressive feat.
The plan revolves around this year's fifteenth stage. The stage is set to be ridden between Martos and Sierra Nevada, a day which is already set to be brutal with the Alto del Purche (9.1Km; 7.5% average gradient) and the ascent to the Sierra Nevada via Hazallanas (19.5Km; 7.9% average gradient) with the finale above the ski station at 2508 meters of altitude.
However Race Director Javier Guillén has said in an interview with RTVE that there is the plan to take the summit finish five kilometers higher up the mountain, with a possible finale at the Observatory at an altitude of 2896 meters. This would make for the highest finale to a Grand Tour ever, although it is by no means a confirmation.
The Vuelta a España will start on the 19th of August and is likely to have a star-studded set of climbers, as Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic are both eyeing the third Grand Tour of the season, alongside Giro d'Italia podium of Jai Hindley, Richard Carapaz and Mikel Landa.
