Ilan van Wilder sees no end to bad luck, as Tour de Suisse ends with crash on final time-trial

Ilan van Wilder has without a doubt been one of the riders most affected this season due to crashes, and his Tour de Suisse ended in the side of the road with a shocking crash in the final time-trial.

Images obtained by 'Marca' reveal van Wilder's crash, as it seemed the Belgian was misguided by one of the race volunteers and rode into the wrong side of a roundabout in the middle of his effort. The Belgian managed to slow down but crashed into some road furniture and did not conclude the stage. Van Wilder had already crashed on stage three into Grenchen alongside Kasper Asgreen, which took both riders out of the general classification contention - and out of the race for the Dane.

The Tour de Suisse was the first race back after suffering a broken jaw in the mass crash at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, which in itself came after a crash and abandon at the Volta a Catalunya. In April the 22-year old had said already that "it's unbelievable what I'm going through" after his last year included several injuries and a fallout with Team DSM that led to an early contract end.

He had hoped that the Liège crash was "a turning point, that all bad luck is finally over," however unfortunately it wasn't the case for the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team rider. He will be riding the Vuelta a España later on in the year, aswell as some other races where he will still hav the opportunity to capitalize on his obvious potential.
