Stage 4 of the Volta a Catalunya was the only one fit for a regular bunch sprint and it was EF Education-EasyPost's Marijn van den Berg who surged through to the line to take the win.
The fourth stage of the Catalan race was the one best suited to the sprinters and so plenty teams did not want to let go of the opportunity. A tight leash was put on a breakaway of three that went up the road early in the day containing Thomas de Gendt, Urko Berrade and Idar Andersen.
De Gendt and Andersen were the last ones caught with 30 kilometers to go. Wout Poels, Sepp Kuss and Antonio Tiberi sprinted to bonus seconds right after, and two kilometers later Luis Ángel Maté launched himself into a solo attack.
The Spaniard was eventually caught with 9 kilometers to go, with the sprinter teams then picking it up into the finale where a bunch sprint was inevitable. INEOS Grenadiers led out Ethan Hayter into the final kilometer, Lotto Dstny also picked it up towards the finale with Jarrad Drizners then being the first sprinter to launch the dash to the line.
It was a very tight battle for the stage win but at the end of the sprint it was Marijn van den Berg who was the fastest and took the victory. He beat Arne Marit and Emils Liepins who rode to second and third on the day.
