As a new generation surges in cycling, many of the veterans in the peloton announce the end of their time as a pro cyclist. Rohan Dennis has taken to social media this morning to announce his will end in 2023.
The Jumbo-Visma rider has for several year settled into a domestique role, first with INEOS Grenadiers, now with the Dutch team - as did Tony Martin recently - and will end his career this season. Dennis is one of the most prestigious and successful time-trialists of the past decade and will have his last year in pro cycling. "Cycling, you have given me a lot and I'll be forever grateful, it is still a long season ahead however it will definitely be my last as a professional," he wrote.
Dennis turned professional in 2009 within the Australian continental scene, and jumped to Rabobank (now Jumbo-Visma)'s development team, then later joining Garmin at World Tour level in 2013. He has over the past decade taken over 30 pro wins, including world titles at the time-trial events in 2018 and 2019.
Over his long and illustrious career Dennis has taken wins in all Grand Tours and has taken the first yellow jersey at the 2015 Tour de France. He's won throughout his career the overall classification at races such as the Tour Down Under, Tour de la Provence, USA Pro Cycling Challenge and the Tour of Alberta, much to his ability as a climber.
Dennis' career has also been marked by controversy, having left Garmin Sharp mid-season back in 2014 for BMC Racing Team. In 2019 he left Bahrain Merida again during the road season after a spat with the team over it's equipment for the time-trials.
In 2020 he was signed by INEOS Grenadiers where he transitioned into a domestique, proving to be instrumental in Tao Geoghegan Hart's 2020 Giro d'Italia victory where in the final two mountain stages he was in the form of his life. In 2022 he was signed by Jumbo-Visma who had envisioned a similar role for the Australian, where he will end his season. Dennis most recently won stage 2 of the Tour Down Under.
