In 2020 Julian Alaphilippe eyed the cobbled classics, more specifically the Tour of Flanders. Feedback was very good, and the former World Champion is looking to make return and focus on another attempt in 2023.
In an interview with La Montagne, Alaphilippe revealed that in the spring of next season the second monument of the season will be his priority. Alaphilippe made his debut in the race in 2020, where he was in the winning move together with Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert, until a crash against a motorbike saw his race and season finished.
2021 saw him ride into 42nd place as teammate Kasper Asgreen took the win. 2022 saw the Frenchman return to his full focus of the Ardennes classics, however illnesses struck his form, and at Liège-Bastogne-Liège he suffered a crash and serious injuries which was the beginning of the end for a season to forget.
The Belgian team had several riders injured and sick throughout the spring and failed to perform in the cobbles. They are looking to recover next year into the front page, and Alaphilippe is expected to return to Flandres for more.
