Vingegaard, a strong time-trialist, was surprised with the lack of any terrain for the specialists to take advantage of. The only ITT of the race is 22 kilometers long and features several climbs. "I would have liked a bit more. When there's a time trial towards the end of the race, that's to my advantage. Of course it would have been nice to have a bit more, but that's how it is. I still think it's a good route," he commented.
Vingegaard has had the perfect combination of form, climbing prowess and team support this July to take his maiden Grand Tour win. The potential is very high, and with the
Giro d'Italia featuring several high-mountain stages that would on paper suit the Dane a lot, it is possible to see him ride the Giro.
Primoz Roglic and Wout van Aert are also not excluded from riding the Corsa Rosa.
"We haven't talked about it yet," Vingegaard shares. "Everything is on the table. It could be the Tour, could be the Giro, we don't know. My preference would be the Tour de France. I would think it would be the Tour, but of course if the team has different thoughts, that's how it is."
Both routes suit the climbers, however the Giro has over three times more time-trialing kilometers - with flat roads. Decisions will be made over the winter, taking into consideration aswell what rivals say. The possibility of both Vingegaard and Roglic teaming up at the Tour once again is also not excluded. "I think we showed in the Tour how we can work together. We can work really well together. We are good co-leaders," Vingegaard admitted.
"I would like to win all three Grand Tours. Next year I'm not ready to do the Giro and Tour in the same year but maybe in the future. It's about what the team wants and what we want. If I have a big wish to do the Giro, they will also listen to that," he concluded.
