Perfect strategy for Jai Hindley in the fifth stage of the Tour de France. The Australian BORA - hansgrohe rider won the stage thanks to a breakaway and also managed to wear the yellow jersey in a day that has seen very big gaps among the overall classification contenders.
The Australian however, assured that the initial plan before the stage was not for him to get into the breakaway, but in the end he did it and got what he got: "This was not the plan, we improvised, I managed to get into the group and I was able to enjoy. It's incredible, I have no words." 36 riders went up the road including teammates Emanuel Buchmann and Patrick Konrad who provided a lot of support throughout the day.
UAE Team Emirates decided to pace it out throughout the day, but with some alliances the BORA rider managed to enter the final climb with a few minutes still of advantage. He then performed to his best level, on the Col de Marie Blanque he was able to match and then drop Felix Gall who had attacked.
"The goal once I went solo was to get the yellow, take as much time as I could, win the stage and get the yellow." The stage win was almost certain, despite the impressive surge of Jonas Vingegaard. His first Tour win on his debut edition, but adding to that, after a strong opening weekend, the time he has won on the road led him to the yellow jersey.
"I didn't know what to expect, it's my first Tour, it's hard to come here with such strong ambitions, I came here to be competitive, this is incredible. This is for my family, for my girlfriend, for my fans, for everyone who has cheered me on throughout my career," he concluded.
Into stage 6 which sees his first challenge in yellow with a summit finish at Cauterets, Hindley will have 47 seconds on Jonas Vingegaard and 1:40 on Tadej Pogacar, who would be considered his main rivals.
