We're on the very last days of 2024 and the transfer season in on the brink of closing. Of course, not literately, as teams are still able to sign riders, but with the market coming to a close there are some interesting statistics that can be looked at.

These were reported by ProCyclingStats, in a year where more teams have gotten high-value sponsors that significantly increased their budget whilst the two Swiss ProTeams Tudor and Q36.5 have signed big stars such as Marc Hirschi and Julian Alaphilippe; and Tom Pidcock respectively. They have hence hentered the fight for the Grand Tour wildcards and will extend the number of teams capable of fighting for World Tour wins throughout the whole year.

The statistics-based website observed that none of the riders in the Top100 of it's rankings retired this year and that 19 signed with a different team - more than last year's 16, but significantly less than the numbers of the 2000's where the average was around the 30's.

There is also a notable increase in the average duration of contracts, as more and more teams become financially stable throughout many years (UAE Team Emirates has for example three riders already signed until 2030) but also because of the very substantial increase in signings of young riders, and teams betting on them to take the leap in the future so they secure the stars of the future. This can be seen by the fact that two 18-year olds are entering the World Tour in Paul Seixas (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) and Albert Philipsen (Lidl-Trek), whilst the Italian Bardiani team will have a whole five new 18-year olds on their ProTeam structure: Mattia Stenico; Santiago Ferraro; Martin Santiago Herreño; Filippo Cettolin and Andrea Montagner. A few dozen World Tour riders, at the time being, continue to not have a pro contract into 2025.
