The final stage of the Saudi Tour has delivered a thrilling finale as the breakaway nearly succeeded, and in the final sprint a surprise winner as emerged as Simone Consonni flew to a strong win on the uphill kicker.
The day was not an easy one, with treacherous roads, gravel and and rolling finish in the menu. Kamil Malecki, Tximon Juaristi, Marcus Hansen, Ceriel Desal, Alessandro Iacchi and Etienne van Empel joined the day's breakaway which was set to cause a lot of pressure in the peloton.
Kamil Malecki was the final survivor of the breakaway, being reeled in with just over two kilometers to go. The bunch sprint was then the obvious scenario, however with several teams in front seeing a chaotic finale. Dylan Groenewegen was the first to launch the sprint in the front, but the uphill gradients and poor timing saw him overtaken.
It was Simone Consonni who had the perfect position and jumped across to a very strong and important win for the Italian. He beat Matteo Malucelli and Pascal Ackermann who completed the podium, and as for the overall classification Ruben Guerreiro managed to secure the triumph.
