Primoz Roglic is back! The Jumbo-Visma rider, in traditional fashion, started his season with great form and has won stage 4 of Tirreno-Adriatico.
A breakaway went away early in the day with a gap that reached over 7 minutes. Davide Bais (EOLO-Kometa), Mads Wurtz (Israel - Pemier Tech), Filippo Magli (Green Project-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè), Lucas Eriksson (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) and Valerio Conti (Team Corratec). It was a quality quintet but one that wouldn't survive until late in the day as the peloton pushed the day hard.
In the first ascent of the climb to Tortoreto Mikkel Honoré, who had attacked earlier was caught by the peloton. The race blew up there as Soudal - Quick-Step pushed the pace, with Julian Alaphilippe putting on an explosive attack. Adam Yates and Wout van Aert then bridged across, but the danger of the attack saw the GC group following right behind.
The race settled afterwards, with Groupama - FDJ and Trek - Segafredo pushing the pace on the penultimate ascent. The tension was high and in the run-up to the final ascent then Wout van Aert and Tom Pidcock went down. As soon as the final climb started there were moves but the GC riders remained safe.
Inside the final 2 kilometers Lorenzo Fortunato and Damien Howson launched an attack with Attila Valter controlling the race for Jumbo-Visma. They were brought back then inside the final kilometer, with Hugh Carthy attacking.
It was all to come down to a sprint however. Victor Lafay and Adam Yates tried to anticipate the competition with early moves, but in the final meters Primoz Roglic had the necessary explosivity and has outsprinted the competition. He beat Julian Alaphilippe and Yates in the final sprint.
