Movistar reportedly ‘confident’ that Nairo Quintana will race the Giro d’Italia despite injury concerns

Having been forced to abandon the Volta a Catalunya after he crashed and ruptured his anterior sterno-clavicular ligament in his arm, Nairo Quintana missed the Tour of the Alps, which was set to be a key preparation race for the Giro d’Italia next month, with the Colombian’s participation at the first Grand Tour of the year in some doubt.

Quintana also had issues at the start of the season with a COVID-19 infection, which caused him to delay his return to European racing until the Volta a Catalunya in March after riding the Tour Colombia.

However, according to Ciro Scognamiglio from La Gazzetta dello Sport, his Movistar team are ‘confident’ that Quintana will be in attendance at the race in May, which he won in 2016, in spite of his hindered preparation.

He is set to lead the Spanish team at the race alongside Einer Rubio, who won a stage at last year’s Giro d’Italia, as well as Fernando Gaviria, who has previously won five stages at the Corsa Rosa.
