In this year 2024, Tadej Pogacar has become the first cyclist to complete the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France double since Marco Pantani in 1998. It seems that this feat has piqued the interest of his eternal rival Jonas Vingegaard.
In a statement to Danish television station TV2, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader has hinted at the possibility of attempting it in 2025: "I've read on some sites that I'm supposed to ride the Giro, so maybe I will. We haven't decided anything yet and we'll decide later. I still think the Tour is the most important event in cycling".
Of course, riding a stage-race has an uncertain factor, especially compared to a training camp. But, of course, Pogacar proved this year that it's possible. "I'll only do that if it's a good preparation for the Tour and I see chances to win. It would be great, but it shouldn't be at the expense of the Tour."
Pogacar swept through a Giro in which he was unchallenged, beating the second-place finisher by nearly 10 minutes and winning a total of six stages. Waiting for him at the Tour were Vingegaard himself, Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel, the three best Grand Tours riders besides him. However, he had no problem taking the yellow jersey either, taking more than 6 minutes from the Dane and more than 9 minutes from the Belgian, while his Slovenian compatriot was forced to abandon.
It must be said that he was "lucky" that Vingegaard did not arrive with an optimal preparation after his terrible crash in the Itzulia. Evenepoel and Roglic also crashed there, so we don't know if they were at 100%. What we can't take away is the real exhibition of the Slovenian, who has swept through the whole season, not only in the Tour.
He only needs to win the Vuelta a España to complete the trio of three-week races, so he could leave room for the Giro. The Tour is non-negotiable and it seems unlikely that he will attempt all three, at least this year. This would therefore leave a chance for Jonas Vingegaard to win his first maglia rosa, while in France we could see both of them at their best at the same time for the first time.
