Jonas Vingegaard will not take part in the upcoming Volta a
Catalunya as he continues his recovery from the crash that forced him out of
Paris-Nice last week. The Danish rider had already been struggling to find his
best form before the incident, and despite hopes that he could return in time
for the Spanish stage race, he has lost the battle to regain full fitness.
His team, Team Visma | Lease a Bike, confirmed the news via
social media. "Jonas Vingegaard has not yet recovered sufficiently from
his crash in Paris-Nice," the statement read. "He will therefore not
start in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. We wish him a speedy recovery!"
Vingegaard’s absence will be a blow for Visma, especially
after Matteo Jorgenson stepped up to claim overall victory at Paris-Nice
following the Dane’s withdrawal. While Jorgenson's success was a major boost
for the team, Vingegaard's absence from another key early-season race raises
questions about his condition and preparation in the build-up to the Tour de
France.
In his absence, Visma will field a strong team at Volta a
Catalunya, led by Sepp Kuss, Steven Kruijswijk, and Wilco Kelderman. They will
be joined by Bart Lemmen, Simon Yates, Matthew Brennan, and Menno Huising.
Kuss, the reigning Vuelta a España champion, is likely to take on leadership
responsibilities, while Yates will bring additional firepower in the mountains.
Vingegaard’s focus will now shift to recovering fully and
regaining form for the later stage races in his build-up to the Tour de France.
While missing
Volta a Catalunya is far from ideal, the team will be hoping that
extra time off will allow him to return stronger for the bigger targets ahead.
