Jay Vine's goals were open for the Giro d'Italia, and now even more. The UAE Team Emirates rider looked to be in contention for the overall classification, but after a string of crashes and bad days with the weather, he now looks elsewhere for success.
“I’m not going to give a shit about the top 20 on GC. I’m just going to take a couple of recovery days and see what happens in the last couple of days of this week," Jay Vine told Cyclingnews after yesterday's stage at the Giro.
The Autralian rode strong time-trials, but his overall classification tilt took a decisive hit on stage 10 as he suffered too much from the cold and could not feature in the peloton. He's dropped from 11th to 20th spot, currently 18th but almost 13 minutes down on Geraint Thomas.
This will give him freedom to chase stage wins in the mountains, and also puts him in a position of likely support for João Almeida in the mountains. The Australian has so far struggled through the first half of his Giro d'Italia debut, but will now enter more favourable terrain.
