A five man group went clear to form the initial breakaway of the day on stage 5, with the attackers being: Jordan Labrosse (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team), Enzo Leijnse (Team Picnic PostNL), Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis), Thibault Guernalec (Arkéa - B&B Hotels) and Pierre Thierry (Arkéa - B&B Hotels).
Although things then looked to have settled down into a regular breakaway - peloton formation for the day, with 80km to go, things were reignited once again as first a pair of TotalEnergies riders attacked from the peloton and then INEOS Grenadiers' Tobias Foss joined the counter move. By 65km to go, Alex Baudin, Gregor Muhlberger and Tobias Bayer had all joined the move too.
Whilst all this attacking was bringing the chase group closer to the front of the race, it was also bringing the peloton back to within touching distance of the leaders.
Thankfully for the original breakaway though, once the peloton caught the counter attack things calmed down considerably. As a result, with 40km to go, they had re-extended their lead at the front of the race to around 1:20.
Lidl-Trek though, weren't in any mood to pass up a potential stage winning opportunity for Jonathan Milan and as they steadily began to reel in the lead group, now down to just Labross, Thomas and Guernalec. With 10km to go, the breakaway's advantage was down to only around 20 seconds.
As more teams began to start helping Lidl-Trek at the front inside the final 10km, the breakaway's hopes looked to be slipping away. At 5km to go however, the break were still holding strong and dangling 13 seconds in front of the bunch.
With 3km to go it was still 10 seconds, before the energy finally ran out for the attackers inside the final 2km and they were swallowed up by the bunch. From there, the bunch sprint finale was locked. The drama wasn't over, as the Maillot Jaune Remco Evenepoel got caught up in a crash, thankfully inside the final 5km though.
In the fight for the stage win, it was then Israel - Premier Tech's Jake Stewart who powered the win in style.
