Remco Evenepoel has a mixed season, with some successes such as the surprising win at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, however with some disappointments aswell as had been the Tour de Suisse - until he bounced back on the final day of the race.
Lefevere has recently said in an interview, regarding the Vuelta a España: “This course should suit Remco. We have seen in the Giro – despite his lesser preparation – that he has the talent to ride grand tours. If he starts in Spain with normal preparation, I still see opportunities in a few stages," the manager of the Belgian team said.
“I just don't want to assign him a favorite role just yet. It still remains to be seen how he will react to a three-week stage race," Lefevere concluded. Evenepoel is yet to conclude a three-week stage-race, however is eyeing the Vuelta a España as hos Grand Tour target for this season, with the goal of testing himself and trying to prove his quality as a Grand Tour contender.
He's struggled in the recent Tour de Suisse, finishing 11th in the end however taking the win in the final time-trial. The heat and fatigue did not allow the Belgian to perform at the level he had the month before at the Tour of Norway, however that doesn't constitute a concern for Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team.
