Rohan Dennis, the 34-year-old Australian cyclist and
two-time world time trial champion, was involved in a now well documented incident
on 31 December 2023. The incident occurred outside his home in Adelaide, where
a vehicle he was driving struck and killed his wife, Olympian
Melissa Hoskins.
Following the fatal crash, Dennis was released on bail and
later faced three charges: dangerous driving, careless driving, and endangering
human life resulting in death. For much of 2024, little information about the
case was made public until early December, when significant developments came
to light.
On 10 December 2024, Dennis’ lawyer, Jane Abbey KC, revealed
that an agreement had been reached between the defence and the prosecution.
Under the terms of the deal, the original charges were dropped in exchange for
Dennis pleading guilty to an “aggravated charge of creating a risk of harm.”
The case has now been delayed until April 14th.
Dennis, who has achieved stage victories in all three Grand
Tours and last rode for Team Visma | Lease a Bike (formerly Jumbo-Visma) in
2023, could face a prison sentence of up to seven years according to
