Mark Cavendish has taken an early stage win at the Giro d'Italia, however he has not had much to show throughout the remainder of the race, as his presence in the Tour de France is essentially sealed at this point.
"That would be slightly difficult. Because he signed with QuickStep, and we’ve got Fabio Jakobsen and that would make it less easy for him. Fabio is the future of QuickStep," team DS Brian Holm said on in an interview with FloBikes. Despite Remco Evenepoel's absence and the doubts on Julian Alaphilippe being able to start - despite his return to training - the presence of Fabio Jakobsen is a strong enough argument for the Manxman to miss the selection.
"For sure he could win. He could probably break the record, but in a professional team… I guess if they sprint three times, maybe Fabio would win two of them. I think most would take Fabio." he added. Jakobsen was promised and has had his season built around the Tour de France where he will be making his debut this summer.
He will have his leadout present, with Michael Morkov, Florian Sénéchal and many others present and expect to be crucial for the Dutchman's sprint ambitions - aswell as possibly the green jersey.

"He would make his own life a bit more easy if he’d won on the Champs Elysées [2021]. He got a good chance last year on the Champs Elysées and he blew it. That’s life," Holm pointed out.
